PUISSANTE(S)
by Sylvie Castioni

PUISSANTE(S) is much more than a gallery of female portraits . It is a manifesto, a living testimony of a vibrant, embodied femininity , connected to its deep power that has decided to choose itself. These photographs are the result of 24 years of practice and encounters with those whose bodies are scrutinized, sometimes judged to be mistreated.

This project was born and evolved following a radical awakening almost ten years ago . In 2016 I denounced my best friend and associate, guilty of sexual abuse against the models whose careers he managed. After eight years of waiting and investigation, he was finally sentenced in December 2023 to 16 years in prison . This ordeal transformed my outlook . It revealed to me the extent of the hypersexualization of women's bodies, the systemic abuse to which they are exposed, but also my own story as an abused child .

Since then, my work has focused on testifying to the subtlety and infinite palette of the feminine. Power and beauty when they express themselves in all their dimensions, freed from injunctions and relationships of domination. These women that I photograph, whether naked or clothed, are not merchandise. They are inhabited, whole, alive. They carry within them a force that goes beyond the image: their profound humanity. These women are in full possession of their bodies, they are POWERFUL.

Sylvie Castioni

French photographer Sylvie Castioni weaves together fashion, art, and cinema to create a unique visual language. Inspired by 1990s supermodels, she began her career in fashion photography after a family tragedy in 2001, but refocused her art in 2010, rejecting the objectification of women. She explores the intimacy of her models and develops an empowering and authentic approach. Influenced by works such as Anastasia Mikova's Women and Andréa Bescond's Les Chatouilles , Sylvie Castioni embarked on an artistic and personal deconstruction, addressing societal themes such as the place of women and power dynamics. She broadened her scope with bold projects, such as male nudes for Playboy, and committed collaborations with Laposte and Sephora, focusing on self-esteem and balanced representation. Convinced of the transformative role of art, she initiated a photographic project dedicated to female directors, presented at the Cannes Film Festival, and continues to explore healing and emancipation through landmark exhibitions such as À corps perdu. Today, she supports women in reclaiming their image and is entering the art market by revisiting her archives. Sylvie Castioni thus positions herself as a committed artist, whose work becomes a vector for social and cultural change. Her career illustrates her ambition to reconcile art with human and universal issues.
